Wondering if anyone has crossed over SOB since the Passport requirement by Mexico the beginning of March. Normally when we travel to Kino we roll on thu KM 21 Nothing to Declare line never stopping for paperwork. Half of the time the inspectors do a quick check of the trailer but never anything regarding paperwork in the Free Zone. Wonder what is going to happen this time. We are taking all paperwork we would take to get the vehicle permit for the Tow Vehicle for a deeper into Mexico trip, fifth wheel has 10 yr. We'll be prepared but would be nice if someone else has already been thu it. If not will let you all know if anything has changed.
Yes we know the passport check is suppose to be for the interior for now but where & how are they going to check?

Do you have an FMT? The free zone is for cars only. People still require a permit. Even if staying for less than 7 days you still need the FMT but there is no fee.

Moisheh, my understanding is in the free zone you only are required to get a FMT for stays longer than 3 days. Has that changed or have I been wrong? AND you know I NEVER stay longer than 3 days.

Just looked it up and a FMT is not required for a 72 hours or less stay in the Free Zone. More than 72 hours to 7 days it is recommended and is Free. Beyond 7 days it is required and cost $20 USD. That is my understanding but you are more knowledgeable of the area and I could be wrong. The rules keep changing.

Your info is correct. If over 3 days but less tham 7 days you still need the FMT but it is no charge. Over 7 days and you must pay the fees. I never heard of it being optional?? The paaposrt requirement is so new I have zero information. However anything past km21 is considered the interior ( as opposed to the Fronterra). You mean you do not have a passport??

This is the latest.
I don't think it is required at all for Kino.
The FMT statement is the last line. "Neither a vehicle permit nor a visa is required to visit Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco) and other border cities which are classified as "free-zones"."
Kino is in the free zone so does it qualify for no FMT?
NOTE:
It looks like they will soon change the issuance of Vehicle Permits to KM 98 south of Guaymas only. You will still be able to get the Visas at KM 21.

Kino is not a free zone. It is called "hassle free" and only applies to vehicles. Yes Kino is free for vehicles but NOT for people. Two totally different Federal Dept's. One is Immigration and the other is controlled by the Hacienda ( like IRS). Do not get Sonora Only confused with a Federal car permit. Again these are different. AFAIK the Federal car import is still done at KM 21. Being as you don't need a car permit until Empalme it seems they have decided to move the SONORA ONLY to Empalme. Sonora is trying to have the so called free zone extended to Estacion Don. This would allow you to go to Alamos and other areas without vehicle permits. To make matters even more confusing immigration permits are changing along with the rules. Still not much info available. Starts in May.

More paperwork info.

Especially note the FMT fine. If this is true, Mexico should rethink the fine as even we would turn around and go home! We have never been asked to turn it in, when turning in Vehicle Permit, and never have. No one has ever asked for it. Since we flew for years and never had to turn in the FMT when returning from trips to Mexico, we made the assumption not necessary since no one was asking. Boy could we have a fine if this is true! Ain't paying it.

Whats wrong with returning your tourist Visa, Its there country there rules,
I like there new program of making you go to the bank now at the boarder, to pay for it before you get the last stamp. ( As many persons did not pay the FMT fee)
The fee is very small compared to what it take for a Mexican to get a Visa to enter the States.. thats does not include the price to Visit one off the U. S Embassy that issue them.
They are just trying to put a stop to the many Americans and Canadians over staying there Visa..
